JOHN HERDT AND BOBBY BERGE

Bobby Berge and I met in 2001 and in the following year I played guitar in his band at the 2002 Tommy Bolin festival in Sioux City. Since then we have done quite a few studio and live recordings together. Bobby played drums on five tracks on my 2004 Gather CD, including Mountain Town, Brass Ball Concert Hall, I’ll Just Make You Cry, Never Never and With Then Without You, some of which are available above for MP3 downloading. Here are some other tunes we have recently worked on that haven’t been released yet. I played guitars and bass, Bobby of course played drums. We also have some tracks posted from a live jam at Tom Thorsen’s studio in Brighton, CO recorded during Bobby’s trip to Colorado in 2006. You can check out some tunes from that jam by clicking here.

Only Ever the One by John Herdt(5.2MB) *Posted 7-26-08
This is the most recent tune that Bobby and I have done together, and it has one of my all-time favorite Berge drum performances. It’s one of my “pretty” ones but has some juice going.
Denver Shuffle by John Herdt(7.7MB)
This is a fast blues shuffle that I came up with to practice R&B riffs. There is a psychedelic section in the middle that’s pretty cool and some interesting rhythmic interplay later in the track.
Bobby’s Tune by Bobby Berge and John Herdt (4.0MB)
Bobby sent me some drum tracks to check out a few months ago, and I loved his solid arrangement for drums on this track. I was pretty inspired and wrote the parts for guitars and bass fairly quickly. One of the two guitar parts was played on April 28, 2007, so if you get this quickly the music is only weeks old.
Use Me (6.6MB)
We did this version of the classic Bill Withers tune just for fun and to keep our chops up. I intentionally left the parts very sparse so it sounds like three guys just sitting there jamming, though it’s actually just him and me and I overdubbed the bass and one guitar solo, ha ha ha.
JOHN HERDT AND DAVID HARE

David Hare was moving from Sioux City to Las Vegas on September 21, 2007 and spent the night at my house in Colorado to cut the trip in half. We went out for a great Mexican dinner with Bev, then David and I took our acoustic guitars and his lungs into my studio, Rampant Squid, and jammed for a couple of hours. David is well known as singer for the Tommy Bolin Tribute Bands, performances by the Bobby Berge Project and for his own solo work. Here are a pair of tunes from our September 21 jam.

People People (5.6MB)
David Hare: vocals and guitar; John Herdt: lead guitar, shaker (overdubbed)
Wild Dogs (5.8MB)
David Hare: vocals and guitar; John Herdt: slide guitar, shaker (overdubbed)
MIRAGE LIVE IN EVERGREEN 1984

I got Mirage together in 1983 after touring with Ruckus playing commercial rock. I wanted to get back into intense instrumental rock. I had written a lot of our material before Mirage, but these guys were such good players that I count the Mirage versions as the definitive ones. This audio is from the last time we played together except for a single reunion show a year later. We played this at Mike’s mountain home in Evergreen, CO, and recorded straight into a cassette deck, the only edits were to cut out pauses between tunes. John Herdt: guitar; Steve VanDewater: guitar; Paul Molnar: bass; Mike Mixter: drums. All material ©1984 John Herdt except “Country Jam” improvised by the band, “Animal Behavior” by Steve VanDewater and the “Cover Tune” is a cover.

Wild Dogs Acoustic Duet (5.4MB)
In August 2004 I bought a new Taylor acoustic guitar and when I got it home I plugged it into my studio mixer and recorded a rhythm track just to see how the guitar sounded. I had enough time left that I decided to plug in my Ovation Elite acoustic and lay down a lead part with some slide included. Though it was all just an experiment, the resulting track is kind of fun so I decided to present it. “Wild Dogs" is one of Tommy Bolin’s most beloved tunes, and it’s certainly a favorite of mine, check out Tommy’s wonderful version on his Teaser album.
Morning Papers (5.4MB)
I made this tune up real fast on April 28, 2007. I programmed some drum parts to use for a jam with Big Jim Wilson, who was in Denver for a few days from Athens, Georgia, and while I was doing this one I grabbed my guitar and made up the rhythm guitar track on the spot. A month later I finished it with a slide/lead guitar track and bass. I felt lucky that that groove dropped in my lap like it did.
Nothing Like Forever – Live Acoustic Version (4.7MB)
A few people have asked for an acoustic version of this tune from my Wide Open Spaces CD, so here it is. I recorded this live on 8-18-01 at Rampant Squid Recording Studios.
Confucius – Improvised Jam (7.5MB)
This one is for fans of hard jazz-rock fusion. It was recorded live at Dan Lile’s house in Denver on 7-14-83. John Herdt: guitar; Randy George: bass; Dan Lile: drums.
JOHN HERDT AND WALLY Z LIVE AT THE 2005 COLORADO BOLIN BASH

In 2005 it didn’t look like there was going to be an official Tommy Bolin Music Festival in Sioux City, an annual event to celebrate Tommy’s music and his August 1 birthday, so we worked out a Colorado show on August 6 at the mountaintop home of Bolin Foundation President Jim Rhodes. I pulled together two of my oldest friends from Fort Collins, Dave Marsh and Joel Lamoreux, and Wally flew down from Canada. Dave and Joel met Wally for the first time right before we played. Without rehearsals we had a few rough parts, but the soundboard recording is cool and there are a lot of hot parts. Joel Lamoreux: vocals: John Herdt: guitar; Dave Marsh: bass; Wally Z: drums. Recorded off the mixer by David Polhemus, these performances are completely live and unedited except where I had to splice a few parts where the minidisc skipped.
